Geometry

Learning Outcome:
Students relate geometric properties to shape.

Learning Intention: I understand that shapes are defined and related by geometric attributes.

Success Criteria:
  • I can understand and explain the vocabulary: parallel, perpendicular and right angle.
  • I can demonstrate which shapes have parallel and perpendicular sides and which ones have right angles.
  • I can describe geometric properties of regular and irregular polygons.
  • I can classify polygons as regular or irregular using geometric properties.
  • I can name polygons.
  • I can sort polygons according to geometric properties and describe the sorting rule.
  • I can investigate the relationship between the sides and vertices of a polygon, including equal or right angles, by comparing them or using a referent for 90 degrees.
This past week in Mathematics, students in Room 12 continued to expand their knowledge and understanding of how you can relate geometric properties to shape. Students were engaged in a number of different learning tasks that had them singing, moving their bodies, and rotating through stations. Students are expected to be able to identify the names of polygons by identifying their number of sides. Students also need to be able to assess whether the polygon is regular or irregular using a specific set of criteria. In addition to this, students are using symbols to help them identify vertices, right angles and parallel, perpendicular or intersecting lines. Next week, students will be introduced to some new mathematical vocabulary including translating, rotating and reflecting.
