Financial Literacy in Jaipur, India
Must Have's...
Students were abuzz while working on this task in small groups or individually. Many students were shocked at the cost of some of the items for purchase as they went through their “Choice Board Menus” in depth. They were eager and willing to try out new foods and drinks and very excited to pick their two different activities for the day. Many students chose to have a creamy mango lassis for breakfast and stick with a vegetarian dish for lunch and dinner, as they found the tandoori chicken item to be a little too expensive. We did have four students splurging on coconut water and three students were willing to pay a whooping $12.00 for a soft drink! The most popular day activity for students was planning a trip to the Monkey Temple to see the sneaky monkeys in action. It was also the most affordable day activity, only costing $7.95. Lots of students were also willing to pay $14.00 to get Henna art on their arms and legs. Several students budgeted a visit to the Amber Fort to get a ride on a decorated elephant, and three students were willing to stick with simple meals and drinks for the day so that they could visit Eleday, a wildlife center, where students will get the opportunity to learn about the elephants in India. In addition to this, they will get the opportunity to wash, clean, feed, hug and ride these magnificent animals.
Many students decided to work together to calculate the cost of their day. Several students used the traditional algorithm to add and subtract the total cost of all of their purchases. Some other methods students used were tables, diagrams and t-charts.
Success Criteria:

- buying needed items first
- buying items that are affordable
- taking time when making purchases
- not purchasing more than is needed
