Classroom Camping! What a fun day of learning we had. Students learned about how to budget for a weekend camping trip, they wrote about their own favourite camping memories, shared stories with their friends around our campfire and completed a STEM challenge that involved students building a tent!

The following day, students in Room 12 enjoyed Andrew Sibbald’s Pancake Breakfast outside on the school grounds. Students loved wearing their stampede clothing as well.

Then on On Friday, our grade 3's celebrated the first day of summer and National Indigenous People's Day. We began our day in spirit by singing some favourite songs including 'Wanaski,' a morning Cree song by the Iskwew Singers.

Earlier in the year, students examined the work of nature artist Andy Goldsworthy and created beautiful art pieces. Students were excited to revisit this activity.

While outside, students gathered natural found materials and in small groups they created their own art piece that they left outside for everyone to enjoy.

Upcoming Dates:
  • June 24 - 26 - Lunch will be outside this week. Please pack a hat and sunglasses
  • June 24 - Whole School Talent Show
  • June 25 - Yes Day! - More info to come
  • June 26 - Beach Day - More info to come
  • June 27 - Last day - 1/2 Day!
  • June 28 - Summer Break!

A Note of Gratitude…

It has been an absolute pleasure teaching the students in Room 12 this year. They have impressed me daily with their maturity, kindness, helpfulness, independence, perseverance and work ethic. I am wishing them all the best of luck in Grade 4. I will miss all of my Sibbald friends next year and I hope our paths cross again. Please remember to stay in touch!

Love,

Mrs. Swan

Financial Literacy in Jaipur, India

This week, students in Room 12, were invited to spend an entire day planning out how they would like to spend their last day visiting Jaipur, India. Students were given $100.00 to spend and were asked to make a budget to ensure they had enough money to cover the costs of everything they hoped to purchase.

Must Have's...

Students were abuzz while working on this task in small groups or individually. Many students were shocked at the cost of some of the items for purchase as they went through their “Choice Board Menus” in depth. They were eager and willing to try out new foods and drinks and very excited to pick their two different activities for the day. Many students chose to have a creamy mango lassis for breakfast and stick with a vegetarian dish for lunch and dinner, as they found the tandoori chicken item to be a little too expensive. We did have four students splurging on coconut water and three students were willing to pay a whooping $12.00 for a soft drink! The most popular day activity for students was planning a trip to the Monkey Temple to see the sneaky monkeys in action. It was also the most affordable day activity, only costing $7.95. Lots of students were also willing to pay $14.00 to get Henna art on their arms and legs. Several students budgeted a visit to the Amber Fort to get a ride on a decorated elephant, and three students were willing to stick with simple meals and drinks for the day so that they could visit Eleday, a wildlife center, where students will get the opportunity to learn about the elephants in India. In addition to this, they will get the opportunity to wash, clean, feed, hug and ride these magnificent animals.

Many students decided to work together to calculate the cost of their day. Several students used the traditional algorithm to add and subtract the total cost of all of their purchases. Some other methods students used were tables, diagrams and t-charts.

Success Criteria:
I can be responsible in my spending by using strategies, such as
  • buying needed items first
  • buying items that are affordable
  • taking time when making purchases
  • not purchasing more than is needed

ELEV8 LACROSSE

Students in Room 12 received two lessons with ELEV8 Lacrosse this week. When polled by coach Dan, several students stated that they had heard of lacrosse, but had never had the opportunity to play it. This week’s introduction to lacrosse left many students eager to learn more about the sport, and some even mentioned that they would like to start playing lacrosse at the community level!

To begin with, coach Dan helped to educate students on the origin and indigenous roots of the sport in Canada and then he had everyone actively involved in scooping and tossing the ball. Students then participated in a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities and games while being encouraged to interact positively with others. Coach Dan did an incredible job getting students to demonstrate fair play while also focusing on skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching, which are fundamental to any sport.

In addition to this, students were challenged to hop, twice, turn and stop their bodies through the use of obstacle courses and fun drills. This week, students were also introduced to running with the ball, catching and cradling the ball, along with passing, shooting and dodging.

Students are hopeful that ELEV8 Lacrosse will be back at Andrew Sibbald next year! Several students in Room 12 mentioned that they would like to continue to further develop their lacrosse skills by participating in more active and engaging physical activities like the ones offered to them this week.

Physical Education and Wellness Learning Outcomes:
  • I can examine how participation in a variety of challenging physical activities fosters well-being.
  • I can investigate and demonstrate how elements of movement support physical activity.
  • I can apply movement elements when engaging in physical activity.
  • I can adjust movement in response to the element of space.
  • I can demonstrate directional movement in physical activity.
  • I can explore opportunities to contribute to teamwork.
  • I can engage in positive interactions that support teamwork.
